Vibrant, healthy and diverse communities
The vision
Tauranga is our place, a happening place full of opportunity and life. Through working together, building on our wonderful environment and celebrating our diversity and the big and little successes along the way, we have created a city with a real community heart. Tauranga is a city that cares for, and nurtures all its people. Like me, my family /whanau, friends and neighbours enjoy participating in the many activities on offer in our local community. Tauranga is an attractive city, a city that we love and are proud to call home.
A city that people love and are proud to live in and call their own!
Events galore at your fingertips: www.events.tauranga.govt.nz This website is the largest events database in the BOP where you can source updated details and times about events in the area. It is also used by the media as a reliable source of information about upcoming events.
Experience your city: The ‘Know your City’ bus tour, run by the council, provides you with
an opportunity to experience some of the services that the council provides for our city. These tours include a trip to McLarens Falls Park and lunch at the historic village, Chapel Street Wastewater Treatment Plant and Te Maunga Transfer Station. Find out more by going to www.tauranga.govt.nz ‘Know your City’ bus tours.
We have made it easier: An ongoing Resource Consent has been granted for Wharepai Domain which enables up to 10 events to be held per year on the site before having to pay for and lodge a consent. A pulsing city where diversity and success are celebrated Encouraging and embracing ethnic integration: Tauranga proudly supports 145 different ethnic groups which include cultures from around the globe. As an expanding city we are proud to hold the Trustpower Awards, the Community Spirit Awards, the Ethnic Exhibitions and our Settlement Support Project.
A place where people work together to make a positive difference
Making it happen: Tauranga City Council’s innovative City Investment Programme has
seen over 45 Partners contribute in excess of $20m towards Council and community projects. Sports, recreation, arts, culture, heritage and green space have benefited by way of cash, goods and services. These contributions are used to begin, finish or speed up many of the essential “lifestyle” projects being carried out within the greater sub-region. The Kopurererua Valley Development is one of these initiatives. Partners, Rotary and Comvita, are among many who have paved the way to fast track this project. Find out more by going to ‘City Patnership Programme’.
An attractive city full of life, opportunities and activities
Schools are now actively involved in Creative Tauranga through the Smart Arts Strategy. The number of events happening in our city and people’s awareness of them has increased substantially. Communication channels have improved for regular events. Business Events now include Business Awards for sustainable businesses, export businesses and tourism businesses. We all enjoy and support events like Christmas in the Bay, Arts Festivals, Ethnic Festivals and our world - famous Jazz Festival. There has been a concerted effort by all to strengthen the infrastructure of event management.

Case Studies:
Merivale Idol: It was an exciting day! The third Merivale Idol event in 2007 was seen as highly successful. Children of all ages displayed their varied talents on stage and the estimated crowd of 1200 including volunteers reinforced community spirit through encouragement and participation. Both The Mayor Stuart Crosby and Minister of Youth Affairs the Hon Nanaia Mahuta attended.

Migrant & Refugee Project: Initiated by Volunteer Western BOP in September 2006 this project provides opportunities for migrants and refugees to integrate into the local community through volunteering via organisations like; Settlement Support NZ, Tauranga Regional Ethnic Council, English as a Second Language Tutors. A major awareness campaign about this project is ongoing in the community and opens the doors to identify and accept migrants from a diverse range of cultures as volunteers.
