SmartGrowth is often held up by central government as an example of best practice demonstrating elected leaders, tangata whenua and interest groups working together towards a common vision.SmartGrowth, the growth strategy for Tauranga and the Western Bay over the next 50 years, provides the city with guidance on priority actions to progress transportation, development, landuseand infrastructure
needs.
A place where leaders are developed
- A civic programme for use as an integral part of the social studies curriculum is being developed.
- A councillor 'job description' was developed and is used to promote the role and purpose of elected representation andto encourage people to put their names forward for election.
A community that knows, has confidence in, and supports its leaders
Elected members of Tauranga City Council welcome contact with the community and have their contact details widely available via all council communication eg website and print material. The Mayor has regular Wednesday morning feedback sessions for residents and one of the Councillors has recently trialled bi-weekly'clinics' for residents at the Mount and Papamoa.Elected representatives attend community events and community engagement opportunities to hear what people have to say.
